Library Services

 

There are a number of local library resources available to GUC students. Students are strongly encouraged to also access resources from their ‘parent university’ library.

 

The following library services and resources are available to all enrolled students and staff at GUC:

 

Central West TAFE LRTC (Learning Resource and Technology Centre) Curtin and ECU place resources in the CWTAFE LRTC. These are the primary resources for students studying at the GUC, and include required textbooks plus some additional resources.

 

The LRTC collection can be accessed via the CWTAFE online library catalogue at http://www.centralwest.wa.edu.au/learningresources/default.cfm

 

The LRTC also has access to licensed databases.

 

How do I join the LRTC?

 

Take your student ID card to the service desk and you will be registered as a borrower immediately. Please note that this card must indicate current enrolment.

 

What you can expect from the LRTC:
  • Collection of books – Fiction and Non-Fiction

  • Journals and magazines, these can be of great use in determining current information trends related to your course.

  • Bindomatic – for professionally bound covers on your assignments

  • Laminator – (A4 & A3)

  • Information File – Tropical information on a wide variety of subjects

  • Reference – Dictionaries, Encyclopaedias galore, available in print and CD-ROM formats

  • Closed Reserve – frequently used material is kept on closed reserve but is available for overnight loan.

  • Inter-library loans – If the LRTC doesn’t have it, well someone else will and they can borrow it for you, just ask

Access to online materials at Geraldton Universities Centre

Students have access to computers at the Centre. In addition, students have access to a large array of software applications, internet access and a printer. A password is not required to log onto computers at the GUC, simply click on the Enter button.

 

Access to computers at the centre are available during office hours i.e 9.00am – 5.00pm.

 

Mid West Education Resource & Video Centre (MWER&VC)

Curtin Bachelor of Education students studying at GUC have access to the MWER&VC. The Centre offers a wide selection of education resources including:

Geraldton Regional Library

 

GUC students can use the Geraldton Regional Library as a secondary resource. The library is not funded to stock university level textbooks; however you may find interesting support material for your studies.

 

Joining the Library Library membership is FREE!

 

 

All that is required:

  • Current proof of address (e.g. Drivers license, rates notice)

  • A second contact other than your own residential or postal address (e.g. Work, family member)

  • A fully refundable deposit may be charged where proof of address or a second contact cannot be supplied.

  • A deposit membership is also available for non-residents and visitors.

Your membership card entitles you to borrow up to 6 items from the library.

 

Collections

  • Geraldton Regional Library is part of the State Library of Western Australia, which has access to over 2,000,000 items in all the public libraries throughout the State. A complete catalogue of the State Library of WA stock is available at the library, via the Internet. Any item may be obtained for students via the State Library of Western Australia if it is not part of their stock.

  • The library has over 50,000 books and other resources to cater for every age and variety of interests.

  • A collection of reference material, atlases and maps are available to help with research.

  • Books and cassettes in 44 languages other than English, such as Italian, Japanese, Vietnamese etc.

  • Videos and DVDs are available.

  • Current periodicals and newspapers can be read in the library and previous issues of periodicals may be borrowed for home reading.

  • A collection of local studies material including books, microfilms, photographs and newspaper cuttings is available for consultation. Local newspapers are available on microfilm form 1878 and Rate books from 1900.

  • Paperback exchange, Jigsaws, Music cassettes, and CDs are available.

  • Large print books and talking books on cassette or CD for loan.

  • A collection of Music Scores are housed in Geraldton with access to a wider range held at the State Music Library.

  • Access to online full text articles via a user-friendly EBSCO host search interface.

Services

  • A colour photocopying service is available.

  • Story Time for pre-school children weekly, and Book Worms Club monthly.

  • A mobile or homebound service for the elderly.

  • A regular bulletin lists new additions which may be reserved.

  • A word processing personal computer and printer is available thanks to FOGL (Friends of the Geraldton Library) who raised the funds to purchase the equipment. Bookings recommended.

  • Laminating and binding service available.

  • Public access to the internet for research is available free of charge for one hour while email is charged at $5.70 per half hour. Bookings recommended.

  • A TTY Telephone is available for the hearing impaired.

  • Reserve items that are out on loan

  • Renew items you have on loan
