COVID-19

20 March 2020

Media Release

COVID-19

The Geraldton Universities Centre (GUC) in consultation with our partnering universities continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation and take appropriate action based on the advice from State and Federal government health authorities.

It is a constantly changing environment and effective as of Monday 23 March, on campus tutorial classes for GUC supported CQUniversity, University of Southern Queensland, and Curtin University students will cease for the remainder of semester one.

What will this mean for GUC students?

Thanks to the GUC’s unique mixed mode model, the impact on GUC students will be minimal.  Access to GUC tutorials will be provided to students via ZOOM conferencing service, a service that is already available to GUC supported students studying from outlying communities.

The GUC campus and 24/7 student study hall will remain open to support students who need internet access, printing services, use of IT equipment and GUC library text books.  GUC administrative and academic staff will be on campus, providing the same high level of academic, administrative, and pastoral support that is always available to our students.

GUC 2020 Graduation Ceremony

Scheduled to take place at the Queens Park Theatre on April 23rd, the ceremony has been postponed to comply with Australian Government social distancing directives.

GUC Director Natalie Nelmes said that it was with a very heavy heart that this decision was made.

“Graduation is a very important celebration for our students, their families, our staff and the wider community, and we will reschedule the 2020 Graduation Ceremony when it is safe to do so.”

The April 1st official opening of the new building extensions and 24/7 student study hall by the Minister for Education Dan Tehan MP and Minister for Defence Industries Melissa Price MP has also been postponed.

GUC Board Chair Steve Douglas said that these are unprecedented times and on behalf of the GUC board he would like to assure students that the GUC will continue to provide high level support to them.

The GUC will continue to update students as new information and updated health directives come to hand.

Ends.
